(Filtration + Dehydration) x Evaluation = Sedimentation (Analysis)

by Scott Mills

Once the sediment traps got back to the Nature Divers shop it was time to put our science caps on. The first step was to acquire all the necessary materials for analysis, which can be quite tricky on a remote island such as Roatan. We managed to make do with our store-bought coffee filters and our makeshift funnel (2L bottles cut in half).

The first process was to remove the sediment from the traps by pouring them out over the filter papers, letting the water drain through the funnel. After the traps were nice and rinsed out, we set them aside for 2 days in a protected area to completely dry out.
